I have many of these books in order to know how to refute the use of psychological methods in helping Christians who are experiencing serious mental emotional problems. Just as guilt (as an emotional response) should never be used to motivate anyone at any time, (Narramore, 1984) psychological methods should not be used in evaluating or assisting a "born-again" Christian. Scripture and brotherly love are entirely sufficient for this purpose.
"Modernity" is the "trial and error" discovery of new ways of doing things, new ideas and concepts, new assumptions, after all anything new is better, isn't it? Like most other modern concepts which are developed to benefit someone economically, psychology developed into a "modern" way of helping people deal with the problems of life, for a fee. Churches certainly have their share of people with problems. Most local churches and even denominations saw this as a panacea for dealing with the people with problems while they concentrated on organizational aspects of management and church growth, so they got out of the business of the "cure of souls" and the "gospel" became a motivational message toward duty for purposes of local church growth.
So it has been the practice in most churches, for many years now, to refer most people with "psychological " problems to psychologists and counselors outside of the church. It hasn't mattered much whether they are so-called "Christian" counselors or not. Most professional "Christian" counselors and psychologists integrate the various psychological methods with the "concept" of christianity. They integrate learned theories and leave the Holy Spirit out.
There are many things wrong with this. To mention only two, most of these techniques are directed toward encouraging the counselee to self-centeredness and self-sufficiency which is contrary to the biblical view for a Christian to be "in Christ". And none of the secular practioners will acknowledge any spiritual relationship, and very few of the Christian "integrationist" counsel with the view of the Holy Spirit's role in the process and in the Christian's life. Many well known psychologists have indicated that the various methods and theories of psychology really don't work, what works is a sincere caring personality of the counselor. (Szasz, 1988)
Willingness to counsel (edify) with scripture
and in brotherly love should be the attitude of every Christian in the local
church. Sad to say, it is not. Because of the change in the purpose of the
church most congregations do not have a grasp of who they are in Christ, how to
stand in God's grace and edify one another in love. All they know is their
ministry (i.e. responsibility) in helping the church grow.
